About Diana
Diana operates in the Heda area, located in the southern part of Numazu City and the northern part Nishi-Izu, focusing on regional revitalization, local community development, vacant house regeneration, and tourism promotion as its core business activities.
This name Diana is the same as that of the late Princess Diana, so it is also read as Diana. However, it is also the name of the goddess of hunting, chastity, and the moon in Roman mythology, corresponding to Artemis in Greek mythology.
The goddess Diana rules over forests and wild mountains. Illustrations often depict her with a bow and hounds, and she is associated with the moon in the night sky. She is typically portrayed with a crescent moon and stars around her head, characterized by her strict preservation of chastity as a virgin goddess.
And the name of Diana, which visited Heda in 1854 and led by Russian Admiral Putyatin, who initiated the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and Russia, is said to be derived from the name of Diana, the goddess of Roman mythology.
Diana, a 19th-century Russian naval warship built in 1853, is known for its historical connection with Japan. Here is a brief overview of Diana and background.
Diana December 2, 1854, Diana sank in Suruga Bay due to the Ansei Tsunami caused by a major earthquake.
With the help of local residents, Admiral Pucharin's party saved the lives of about 500 crew members. They visited Heda and made Heda their lodging.
With the cooperation Heda, Japan's first Western-style sailing ship was jointly constructed by Japan and Russia Heda. Given the vastly different shipbuilding methods and technologies used by Japan and Russia, the conflicting measurement systems (the metric system versus the shakkanho system using shaku and sun), and the language barrier, this achievement was truly remarkable.
Amidst such circumstances, the 100-ton sailing ship Heda was completed in just three months, enabling a safe return to Russia. Meanwhile, Admiral Putyatin, while overseeing the ship's construction, advanced negotiations between Japan and Russia, culminating in the signing of the Japan-Russia Treaty of Amity on December 21, 1854.
In 1853, the famous Commodore Perry arrived in Japan. The following year, on March 3, 1854, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States was signed, leading to Japan's opening to the world. At the same time, Admiral Putyatin's visit aboard Diana also served as a catalyst, accelerating Japan-Russia negotiations.
